Why are you looking at a to-do list today?
I looked up from my bullet journal, from the seven dot points that ran down the page. While I have long since respected the sabbath, it only occurred to me at eight this morning that I was not really living it out.
How can I honestly say that I don’t have time to rest, or have time to myself, or any other variation on such a theme, if I have not properly embraced the God-given day of rest?
My plan for today, and for the Sunday’s ahead of me, is to spend it with intention, with minimal screens. I have decided to continue with my night routine of making lunch for the next day and putting the kitchen to bed; they’re small habits that make a big difference, and the only tasks I ‘need’ to achieve on a Sunday. There will be no other work done today; until my evening routine, I want to be properly resting.
A majority of the house cleaning happens on Saturday, and anything extra (for instance, I have a pile of ironing) can wait until a night during the week. The big jobs are done; there is nothing urgent to be accomplished. I want to see Sunday as a time to connect with God creatively rather than another day worked away.
For the afternoon, a puzzle and a cup of tea. I can relax. For tomorrow, once again praying to do the job I am paid to do with peace and wisdom. When people at work see me, speak to me, I hope they are drawn to Christ (and I hope I don’t get in the way!).
But until then, a kettle to boil and an afternoon to be enjoyed.
Sarah xx
