Information Overwhelm

In this age, we can access knowledge immediately. We are able to ask any question and receive an answer, regardless of how accurate, and feel either appeased or concerned. And while some knowledge is to our benefit, in a lot of ways we can access too much too quickly.

We are not used to waiting. We are not used to things being unclear, because we can always find what we need. We want to chase the latest information, the piece of the puzzle that will make our lives easier, richer, or more comfortable.

But if our home is to be a peaceful, joyful place, then we need to find a limit on what information we consume. We need to rest on what is true, and steadfast. The things that matter do not change – God’s word remains to be what it always has been.

When I spend too much time consuming media, instead of creating, or just being in silence, that’s when time goes too quickly and I feel like I’ve wasted an afternoon. I don’t need to know everything, and I especially don’t need to hear everyone’s opinion on it. God’s voice should be the loudest in my world, and the voice I seek above others.

If I’m constantly consuming what the world is selling, I’m quieting the Holy Spirit in me. I’m ignoring wisdom that can only come from the Lord, and I think when this happens, we will feel uncomfortable doing something that may be contrary to the world. But Jesus calls us to do what doesn’t always make logical sense. Our lives should look different. Others may think we are foolish but if we are following God, our reputation doesn’t matter.

I thank God that He is leading me. I thank Him for being here and being bigger than the noise. He is what we need more than anything else.
