From the outside, it might seem like life is monotonous. I keep the same routine each week day; I drive the same route to work, the same dishes are used and washed and used again. Saturday’s hold the same chores that will always need doing.
I do not find this routine boring. At times it is tiring, and at times there may be inward grumbling. But I think what keeps it from being boring is knowing that the Lord is at the centre of the work, of the day, of my life.
“Do the next thing”, as has been said many times, is important to remember when we want to do big, amazing things for the Lord, or when we are questioning the direction of our life. But it is also the resting of our hearts when all of those daily jobs, the things that cannot go unfinished, overwhelm us.
As I discussed last week, I have kept my to-do list for today minimal, and have tried to keep jobs at bay until evening. There may not be much to do, yet thinking of the week ahead, it can feel like there is not enough time.
So what is my prayer? Lord, show me the next thing. Not everything can be done this very second. What is the most important thing, to Him, to achieve? And it might not even be something on the to-do list! While I love a plan, I need to learn to give the Holy Spirit room to move. May God’s will always be done.
It was cloudy earlier in the day, but now the sun is coming in, along with a nice breeze. I want to enjoy the evening while it lasts, and not waste it away worrying about tomorrow or a to-do list.
My next right thing might be small. But if He has told me to do it, and it is done with a humble heart, then I am obedient.
