Hello again!
To my right sits my morning cup of tea and my current cross-stitch project, something I’ve been working on during Sydney’s lockdown.
For those who know me, I don’t think you’d call me adventurous. I’ve always been most comfortable at home, and easily fill my time pottering around the house. Writing. Cooking. Gardening. Reading. Sewing. Organising. While I know not everyone gravitates towards these activities, they have filled these odd days with structure and satisfaction in seeing my own hands create something new and beautiful.
When my days are busy and full, these activities are the first to go, and if I must, I rush them. I am no stranger to unpicking and redoing embroidery stitches or hurrying through a few pages of a book then realising I have no idea what’s going on in the story.
But having more time lately has allowed me to rediscover the slow, quiet rhythm of cross-stitch.
I’m not someone who is constantly sewing; I can easily work on embroidery for three weeks without looking up then just as easily stuff it in the cupboard for two months. (I think the same could go for cooking, but alas, I need to eat.)
For now, at least, I’m loving it, and have a few projects lined up that will fill the rest of the year. These creative moments at home have been small moments of joy in a time where there is a lot of uncertainty and worry. While I’m no expert at sewing or cooking, these things settle the soul when life feels overwhelming.
We can’t expect ourselves to always be creating or doing something new – everyday life in itself is full and important – but there is something to be said for taking a step back in small ways when we can.
I’d love to hear what creative projects you currently enjoy, or ones that you might not have been able to do for a long time. God has made us all with different interests, and I’d love to learn about yours!
