Burn (written by Sarah Bennett)
I walk down the street and I do not recognise the signs but I know the sound of my voice / know the sound of breaking apart / breaking open / rising from the ashes / I am in a new city / I befriend new libraries / invite myself to new bookstores / when I ask if they have a poetry section my voice is the same as the day you said goodbye / the day we said hello / the day you told me you loved me / my voice remains the same / new words / same sounds / new books / same running my fingers over the pages as though I am a lover / not a fighter / you made me a fighter / you ignited the fire / you let the pages burn / but my voice will never be extinguished
I wrote this two days ago and I loved writing it because I’ve been busier lately which means I haven’t written as much. But then this poem happened and I’m reminded of how important creativity is in my day-to-day life.
Happy Friday!
