So It Begins

One of my sisters and I decided that we would read Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte at the same time, then talk about it. Our first goal is to read the first five chapters, which is fifty pages or so, then discuss; and so on until completion.

This doesn’t seem like a hard thing to do. Fifty pages isn’t very many, and it’s a book I want to read. And yet I’ve owned it for about four years without making it past the first two pages. I don’t know why! I’m hoping that by reading it with my sister, I’ll be motivated to get through the hard parts until it is easier to read. It’s my firm belief that in most classics, you have to get past a certain point before it’s easy to read. I’m hoping it’s early on with this one.

Reviews toward this book are mixed, which makes me slightly nervous. Will I love it or hate it? It’s one of those books that probably won’t have a happy ending (give me some Jane Austen any day) so I don’t really know what to expect.

Well, I’m happy to report that whilst eating a toasted cheese sandwich (classic cheesy boi) I made my way through the first chapter! Now I can relax; I’ve made my start. I won’t say too much, only that I’m intrigued as to where the story goes.

I must confess, I have given up on ‘Mansfield Park’ (by Jane Austen) a little bit to undertake this journey, but I don’t feel too bad about that. Mansfield Park was always my least favourite Jane Austen movie, and the book is cementing this in me. Not that’s it bad, it’s just not doing it for me right now. Maybe in a few years I’ll find myself unable to put it down…

Well. I doubt I’ll get to chapter two of Wuthering Heights today; the first chapter has been a win and is enough to make me optimistic about the rest of it. I don’t want to dampen the mood by trudging through a second chapter.
