I’ve been thinking a lot about words. More than usual because I’ve been writing this assignment and it’s driving me crazy but it’s got me thinking about words and their meanings.
Because I was interested, I looked up words with great meanings that we don’t have an equivalent to in English.
Campers, it saddened me.
There are so many brilliant words out there that we don’t use because we don’t have a translation. How sad is that? So many brilliant definitions go to waste. Here are my favourite five, though there were many amazing ones.
// Razljubit (Russian)
The feeling you have for someone who you used to love but no longer do.
// Kilig (Tagalog)
The feeling you get when something romantic happens to you.
// Engentado (Spanish)
Feeling ‘peopled out’ and wanting to be alone.
// Mamihlapinatapai (Yaghan)
A wordless look between two people when they both want the other to initiate something but neither want to initiate.
// Jayus (Indonesian)
A joke that’s so bad it makes you laugh.
